What makes a succesful business person?

Whether you're just starting out in business or looking to progress within your current career, it's important to know what it takes to get to the top of your game. To help you on the way, here are some of the essential qualities and skills you need to be a successful businessperson.

Enjoy what you do

You're going to spend a lot of hours at work, so you it's important to make sure you enjoy it. If you love what you do every day, not only will you look forward to going in every morning, but it may even stop feeling like work completely. In addition, you are far more likely to be successful if you are doing work that you are passionate about.

Have a strong work ethic

You might think this goes without saying, but to achieve success you must be prepared to work hard. Working long hours, at times to the detriment of your social life, is all part of making it in the business world. You'll find you reap what you sow, though, as the more you put in now, the more you'll get out in the long term.

Go the extra mile

It's not just about putting in the hours. Taking time to put extra effort into individual tasks or to take on work beyond your remit is a sign that you're both ambitious and dedicated. Being proactive and capable of handling additional responsibility, particularly on your own initiative, is crucial if you want to reach the top of your chosen career path.

Be decisive

Things can happen fast in business. What matters is being able to react quickly by making well-judged decisions that you feel confident about. Business is all about risk, so don't expect the answers to be obvious.

Confidence is key

A confident business person is able to come across convincingly to both customers and colleagues. Self-assured employees or entrepreneurs tend to be able to give more effective presentations and are better at networking.

Communicate

Regardless of whether you are a business leader or part of a team, the importance of being able to communicate effectively cannot be overestimated. Remember that communication is about listening as well as speaking. Successful business people know that it's important to be open to others' opinions and accept help and guidance, particularly if you're just starting out.

Be organised

Organisation is everything; keeping track of pending tasks and staying on top of your finances is vital in business. Our free budget planner is the ideal tool to help you monitor your cash flow, so you can easily see your incomings and outgoings at a glance.

Be tenacious

Don't expect things to happen overnight. Success may only happen after several failures, and a good businessperson must be prepared to accept this and know when to try again or move on. It's essential to stay focussed and remember your vision. Don't give up.

Think positively

Negative thinking will get you nowhere. All businesses go through rough patches, but the key thing is to retain a sense of perspective and think positively about what you can take from the experience.
