How can I save money?

Setting a budget is a great way to start getting a handle on your savings. Once you know where your money is going, and how much you want to spend and save it's much easier to get in control.

Budgets are more than just paying your bills on time—a budget is also about determining how much you should be spending, and on what.

Making the effort to get into the habit, and money management will become a breeze. Sure, you can make adjustments with a tweak here and a slip up there, but by staying close to the core concept of your budget, you’re guaranteed to gain financial ground, rather than lose it.

Don't know where to begin?

If you don't know where to start, why not try the 50-20-30 rule to help you build a budget. The idea is to split your spending into three categories: Essentials, Saving and Discretionary spend.

50% of your income should go on your living expenses and essentials. This includes things like your rent, utilities, groceries and transportation for work.

The next step is to dedicate 20% of your income towards achieving your longer term financial goals. This means putting money towards your savings, rainy-day funds, investments, and debt-reduction payments (if you have debt, like credit card payments or loans).

The final 30% of your income, and the one that can make the most difference in your budget, is the unnecessary expenses that enhance your lifestyle. Yes, those morning lattes do count.

Some financial experts consider this last category to be completely discretionary, but in reality our daily habits can be the hardest ones to shift, and the ones that bring us joy. Remember, budgeting isn't about saying 'no' to things or depriving yourself, it's really about being in control to help you acheive what you want out of life.
