How can I save money?

Setting a budget is a great way to start getting a handle on your savings. Once you know where your money is going, and how much you want to spend and save it's much easier to get in control.

Money Dashboard makes budget planning a breeze by letting you define the areas that matter to you, like household bills or going out, then automatically tracks each area for you over the course of the month.

Not only that, but you can make adjustments with a tweak here and a slip up there. By staying close to the core concept of your budget, you’re guaranteed to gain financial ground rather than lose it.

Don't know where to begin?

Why not try the 50-20-30 rule to help you build a budget? The idea is to split your spending into three categories: Essentials, Saving and Discretionary spend.

50%

50% of your income should go on your living expenses and essentials. This includes things like your rent, utilities, groceries and transportation for work.

20%

20% goes towards achieving your longer term financial goals. Put money towards savings, rainy-day funds, investments, and debt-reduction payments (if you have debt, like credit card payments or loans).

30%

The final 30%, and the one that can make the most difference in your budget is the unnecessary expenses that enhance your lifestyle. Yes, those morning lattes do count. Money Dashboard will help you to identify areas where you can cut back or make improvements to reach your saving goals.

The science of saving

We teamed up with some smart people at the University of Edinburgh and Harvard Business School to understand the science behind how people actually save money through budgeting.

They discovered that new Money Dashboard users typically saved 14% of their discretionary spend in the first month. Furthermore, each log in correlated to a higher likelihood that someone would meet their budget target - so much so, that each login can roughly be equated to a £10 saving for an individual!

The bottom line? Visibility and control (two core things Money Dashboard gives you) are key drivers to help you achieve your goals.

“We didn’t have to change our lifestyle a huge amount to save quite a lot of money... If you took Money Dashboard away from me I genuinely think I’d be really lost.”
