Last month, Money Dashboard has been presenting the open beta product at technology conferences in the UK and around Europe.
Money Dashboard takes security and privacy very seriously and it is at the core of everything we do.
Transaction tagging lets you individually tag all the different things you spend your hard earned money on each month. Then you can see how much you’re spending on clothing, council tax, utility bills, eating out etc.
Why bother, you might ask? Well if you don’t know where your money is going, how are you going to stay in control and make sure you’re financially secure in the future?
How it works
The Money Dashboard personal finance software tool aims to tag all of your transactions automatically, so you can quickly see your financial picture when you log on. Occasionally the system might not be sure how best to tag one of your transactions though, so we’ve made it as easy as pie for you to tag things yourself too.
We’ve set up some standard tags for you to choose from and these are organised in a range of Groups. Here are some examples:
Household - broadband, council tax, rent, phones, TV and utilities
Lifestyle - clothing, drinking/eating, DIY, holidays and gadgets
Transport - fuel, travel and maintenance
Wealth - investments, pension contributions, mortgage payments and savings.
So whenever you find a transaction without a tag, you simply click and allocate an appropriate tag from the list. Alternatively, you can create a new tag of your own.
The beauty of the Money Dashboard tagging system is that it is very flexible and easy to use.
Changing a tag - If you need to modify an automatic tag, you can do that via your Transaction Tagging page.
Adding a new tag - If you want to add a new tag of your own, you can do that via your Budgeting page. So if you’re going to evening classes or paying for gym membership, you can add tags for that. Or you may want to create tags to cover all the different costs of having kids.
Creating a new Group - You can also create a whole new group of your own via your Budget page. So, for example, if you’re getting married and want to view your spending on your wedding quite separately, you can create a specific Group.
Tagging helps you to budget
Once all your tags are in place your Money Dashboard will show you exactly what is what. So if you’ve been living life in the fast lane and overspending, all will become clear. Or if everything is under control and you’re a good saver, you can see how well your plans are progressing.
You can also export your transaction pages if you want to keep them for reference or perhaps give them to your accountant.
Most important of all, the tags help your Money Dashboard keep track of your finances on an ongoing basis and help you to set a realistic budget going forward.
